  • 6 Things You Should Know About About Our Protection Plan

Warranties are a funny thing; most of us scoff at the cost of a warranty at the time of purchase, thinking “what could possibly happen”, or “warranties never seem to cover anything if something does happen” so we smile while declining to purchase the extended warranty. However, it’s a decision we always regret when something does happen, and we hear those fateful words “Did you purchase the extended warranty?”.

According to Forbes, furniture is one of the largest purchases you will make, next to a home, car, retirement and education. And while we purchase insurances and warranties for each of these, why do we continue to ignore the warranty for our furniture?
Now it is true, not all warranties are created equal, and there is some diligence required on behalf of the consumer when it comes to taking full advantage of the warranty. So, let’s take a few minutes to discuss with one of our top DM (District Manager’s) what options are available when it comes to protecting one of your largest purchases.

Question 1. What’s the Difference Between the Manufacturer’s Warranty versus Extended Warranty?
DM: When purchasing furniture, there are a few options available for warranty. Unless stated, all upholstery purchases come with a standard one-year manufacturer’s warranty. This covers anything manufacture related, like if the frame breaks or if the fabric separates at the seams. Surplus Furniture is excited to offer the Total Care Protection Plan, which covers any accidental cut, rips, stains or burns. We also have additional plans that cover springs, frames and reclining mechanisms for the next 5 years. All the customer has to do is contact the warranty company provided in the protection plan kit.

Question 2. Can we purchase the warranty after the purchase?
DM: No. You can only purchase the warranty at the time of purchase. One big factor to consider is optics; if you initially refuse the warranty, but then purchase it at a later date and immediately file a claim afterwards, it appears to the manufacturer that you only purchased the warranty in order to cover a claim.

Question 3. Can you register your Protection Plan online?
DM: Yes. This is a common mistake from customers. When you purchase the Total Care Protection Plan, one of the first things the customer should do is register the plan online. That way all their information is registered and stored should they need to make any warranty claims at a later date.

Ultra Shield's Total Care Kit (Wood, Fabric & Leather)

Question 4. So a customer purchases the Total Care Protection Plan, registers it online and now something has happened and they need to make a claim. What steps do they take?
DM: All the customer needs to do is contact the 1-800 number provided on the protection plan kit immediately. Follow the directions over the phone or on the kit. Once the claim has been approved, the store can look after replacement or repairs of the components.

Question 5. What happens if I am a pet owner?
DM: Surplus Furniture is pleased to offer the 5 Year Total Care VIP Pet Protection Plan, which covers all unintentional and accidental damage from handling as well as damages caused by pets.

Question 6. What’s included in the Protection Kit?
DM: The Total Care Kit comes with the following:
    1) A leather protector & conditioner to prevent leather from drying and cracking
    2) A cream polish to give your wood surfaces a clean shine
    3) A scratch guard to protect the wood furniture against scratches, and
    4) Amodex ink & stain remover.

In addition, the kit comes with a detailed protection plan/service agreement number with details on the coverage and instructions on registering your warranty. You must keep that document as well as your original invoice should you have to file a claim.

Buying furniture shouldn’t be a stressful process. Customers should know that once they make their purchase, Surplus Furniture and Mattress Warehouse will always be at their service to help with any concerns or questions. It’s this confidence and trust that we want to instill on our customers.

  • How to Protect Your Leather Sofa

leather_After purchasing a leather sofa, the first thing is to ensure its protected. Proper maintenance can prolong the life of your furniture; improper maintenance will reduce the life of the piece and effect the overall comfort.

Below are some tips to help you take care of your leather furniture.

    1. General Maintenance
Before use, it's recommended you protect the piece with a leather care agent. This will add a protective layer to help protect the leather from dust and make daily cleaning easier.

    ● First, find a soft, clean towel. Wet the towel with clean water and wring out. Then wipe the surface of the sofa slightly and gently.

    ● Apply leather care agent on the towel and wipe the surface of the sofa once or twice.

    ● After this step, a layer of film will be apparent on the surface. The basic step of a leather sofa protection is done!

    ● Repeat this step every two to three months.

    2. How to deal with stains

If the leather surface gets dirty, like an oil stain, or a ballpoint pen, use leather care agent to clean it off. If you don’t have a bottle of leather cleaner, you can also use a clean white towel with a little bit of aqua vitae on it. Wipe the stains lightly and carefully, then use a dry towel with a little bit of water to wipe the surface again. Follow up with the leather care agent to add a protective layer to the surface of the leather. Make sure you do not use cleaning solvents, varnish, abrasive cleaners, detergent soaps or ammonia to clean the leather or soap or too much water as it may can cause more damage to the surface.

    3. The Environment
Do not keep your leather sofa cold, hot or wet temperatures for a long time. Low, cold temperatures will cause the leather surface to frost, harden, crack, and stiffen, which could greatly reduce the life of a leather sofa. High, hot temperatures would cause the surface to crack and become ashy. Heat draws moisture out of the surface, so leather conditioners can reduce these reactions. It’s a good practice to change the position of a leather sofa periodically, to avoid direct sunlight on a single position. This will avoid discolouration and cracking. Wet temperatures would cause the skin of the leather sofa to crowfoot and crack, so it is important to avoid any sweat on the leather during the summer months. Keep the house well ventilated and wipe the surface of the leather often while keeping the leather surface clean.

At Surplus Furniture and Mattress Warehouse, we have several different furniture care kits for you to choose from. The Leather Care Kits include a cleaner and conditioner; it’s non-toxic, hypo-allergenic, environmentally safe, and safe for children. When you run out of cleaners and conditioners, simply come into our warehouse and purchase a replacement bottle to keep your leather looking like new! We are committed to keeping your investment protected!

  • How to Care for Your Area Rug

An area rug can be a room’s most definitive and stylish decorative item. Depending on its size, shape, and colour, an area rug can change the entire look and tone of a room, or establish an elevated sense of cohesion among furniture. It’s for this reason that homeowners continue to turn to the area rug when decorating a home’s interior.

While area rugs are staples of home décor, some homeowners may be unsure of how to best protect and preserve their rugs. To extend the longevity of your area rug, it’s essential to be diligent about regular care and upkeep. The quality of an area rug can quickly diminish as a result of foot traffic, sunlight exposure, dust, dirt, and stains if adequate care isn’t given. For area rugs delicately constructed or made of fine materials, this care becomes even more important.

So how can you properly care for your area rug from Surplus Furniture?

    Essentials for Regular Upkeep

Kyle Clay Area Rug. Signature Design by Ashley

Area rugs should be cleaned on a frequent basis. This includes vacuuming, which should be done at weekly intervals at minimum. Unlike most traditional styles of carpeting, an area rug should be vacuumed on your machine’s rug cleaner setting. This will stop use of the vacuum’s rollers and instead rely only on its suction capabilities, ensuring that elements like fringe are not damaged during vacuuming.  If your vacuum cleaner doesn’t have a rug cleaner setting, clean on the lightest setting possible. For even better cleaning results, empty your vacuum bag when it becomes half full; this will increase your vacuum’s suction power and help collect dirt embedded deep within the rug.

It’s also important to regularly brush out hair, and to remember to brush with the rug’s flow of fibers rather than against them to avoid any damage. Even for homeowners that don’t have pets, human hair will easily accumulate on rugs, and vacuums can have a more challenging time picking up this hair. There are brushes available that are specifically designed for extracting hair from carpet; these brushes can be found at affordable prices, and most feature long handles to prevent a user’s need to bend over.

To minimize the chance that sand, dirt, and even water make their way onto an area rug, it’s also helpful to place highly absorbent door mats at your home’s entrances to collect the majority of these unwanted particles.

An area rug’s appearance and fibre integrity can also be worn down by exposure to sunlight. Over time, area rugs placed in the direct line of sunlight can begin to show signs of fading. If possible, move your area rug into a position that does not receive direct sunlight, or be mindful to close blinds and curtains when out of the home during the day. If sunlight exposure is unavoidable, ensure that one side of a rug doesn’t fade faster than the other. As a general rule of thumb, rotate your area rug approximately four times a year.

    Stain Removal

There’s a good chance that at some point, your rug will acquire a stain. Accidental spills and messes are a seemingly unavoidable part of area rug ownership, yet they need not spell the end of your rug’s pristine appearance. Most area rug stains can be easily removed with the proper techniques and cleaning solutions.

In the event of a stain, first attempt to absorb as much liquid as possible, and as quickly. The sooner you can extract that juice, wine, or coffee, the less is left to dry and adhere itself to a rug’s fibres. As with removing stains from upholstered furniture, always blot stains, rather than scrub or rub them. This will ensure that a stain doesn’t move deeper into rug fibres or spread. A soft cloth or piece of paper towel should work well as an absorbent material.

After absorbing as much of the spill as possible, you’ll want to apply a cleaning solution. It’s always important to check your area rug’s label for care instructions before applying any type of cleaner; care instructions will typically be based on a rug’s material.  Always test a cleaning solution, whether commercial or made via common household items, on the back or corner of a rug.

This step of the stain removal process can depend upon both a rug’s material and type of stain. The more you understand about your rug’s material, the more effective your removal process can be. As a reference, these common rug materials include:

    • Woven and braided rugs

Before cleaning woven or braided rugs, check to see if any damage has occurred to the fibres. Using any commercial carpet cleaning products and/or vacuuming if a rug is damaged could worsen its condition.

    • Hand-knotted or Oriental rugs

These rugs are more delicate, and should therefore be treated with extra care during regular vacuuming (vacuum on lower settings or consider placing a nylon screen atop it and vacuuming over the screen) and during the stain removal process.

    • Natural fiber rugs

Natural fibre rugs are made of materials like jute, bamboo, sisal, and seagrass, and because of their loose structure, many natural fiber rugs will allow dirt and water to pass through them and onto the floor. To prevent cleaning products from seeping through to the floor, place a towel or drop cloth beneath the rug before cleaning.

    • Fur and sheepskin rugs

Rugs made of this fabric can be regularly cleaned with talcum powder that is left to sit for several hours, and then shook out. When removing a stain, it’s important not to brush or rub a fur or sheepskin rug after wetted with cleaning solution.

    Approaches to Stain Removal:

As mentioned, there are different removal approaches for different types of stains. These include:

Soft drinks, alcohol, coffee: Combine 1 teaspoon of liquid dish detergent, 1 quart of warm water, and ¼ teaspoon of white vinegar. Mix well, apply, and blot clean using a soft cloth.

Butter, gravy, margarine: Use a commercial carpet cleaner that is characterized as a dry solvent.

Tomato sauce: Use a sponge to apply cool water to the stain, then blot with a detergent solution. Next, rinse with a mixture of 1 cup white vinegar and two cups of water, and use a soft cloth to blot dry.

Gum or melted wax: First, attempt to scrape off as much as possible. Next, harden the gum by rubbing a plastic bag containing ice cubes on top of the surface. This will make it easier to continue scraping off the gum. Use a dry solvent commercial cleaner to remove any remaining stain and vacuum dry. After scraping off hardened melted wax, use a cloth or cotton ball dampened with rubbing alcohol to eliminate any wax that remains.

What other common household items can be used to remove stains from area rugs?

    • Shaving cream
    • Hydrogen Peroxide (3%) and Cream of Tartar Mixture
    • Baking Soda
    • Club Soda

Finally, for optimal preservation, have your area rug cleaned by a professional cleaning service every 1 to 2 years. While vacuuming and brushing are important, they won’t be able to eliminate all of the dirt and dust that accumulates deep within your rug’s fibres. A professional service can offer a deep cleaning with steam, advanced vacuums, and more effective cleaning solutions.

  • 4 Tips To Keep Your Furniture Showroom Ready

We've all had that thought when walking into a furniture showroom, how do they keep everything looking nice and new? Think about it – a lot of people come in every day to check out furniture to get a feel for it, sit down on it and envision it in their home. Showroom furniture can take a beating with consistent use but somehow, furniture stores manage to keep them looking spotless and new, time after time again. The sole purpose of furniture is to be used and if stores can keep their floor models looking amazing, than you can too! By checking out these four tips, you can keep your furniture looking showroom ready in your own place for years to come.

    1. Couch Cleaning

Couch CleaningFurniture should be treated like any other object in your home, meaning you should clean it regularly. Depending on the type of material your furniture is made of, you have to find the proper cleaning products to care for it. For instance, if you have fabric couches, consider taking a vacuum and going over it with the wand attachment to suck up any crumbs, pet hair or dust that may be on it. For tight corners and stubborn crumbs, use a brush to lift them out of the fabric. Additionally, spills should be immediately treated with a mild detergent so stains are prevented.

But, if your furniture is made of a different material like bonded leather, a soft, damp cloth can remove dirt, dust and body oil. For more cleaning power, use leather cleaner or non-detergent soap and your furniture will always have a nice shine. Remember, you want to regularly maintain and care for your couches to keep that showroom look!

    2. Table Cleaning

    Table Cleaning

When it comes to end tables, coffee tables, TV stands and dining tables, regular cleaning is required to keep them gleaming. Start off by dusting the tables and then taking a damp cloth to areas that have grime or other soiled marks. Just like mentioned above, tables can be made of different materials like wood and metal, so be sure to use the proper cleaning products to care for them. When you are maintaining wood furniture, polishes can help prevent dust and give them that bright, shiny look.

As a general rule of thumb, always use the same polish on wood furniture and be sure to check that your tables are compatible with the polish. And of course, glass cleaner can be used for glass-topped tables.

For tables constructed with metal, a damp cloth with some soap can suffice, but be gentle as you do not want to ruin the finish. After all, you want your furniture to look like those in showrooms at Surplus Furniture & Mattress! And as always, quickly clean up messes right after they happen to prevent stains.

    3. Furniture Position

Furniture PositionTo put your furniture in the best light, literally, strategically place furniture near light fixtures because it will show its true colours. But there is one caveat, keep your furniture away from areas in your home where you get a lot of sunlight because over time, UV rays can discolour fabrics and materials as well as dry out leather. If placement near windows is unavoidable, be sure you have proper window coverings to lessen the effect.

    4. Don't Forget About Accessories

Furniture AccessoriesLamps, rugs, wall art and other accessories should also be properly cared for on a regular basis. Dust can accumulate on anything and everything, so be sure to vacuum, dust and wipe down furniture accessories often! They complement your entire space and you wouldn’t just want your couch to look good and then have a mountain of dust on lamp shades.
