Black Friday is originally an American holiday that falls on the Friday after the American Thanksgiving each year. Many people across the United States of America have the holiday off! As Canadians we aren’t so lucky, although we still celebrate the holiday and experience the great deals that come with it! The name “Black Friday” was said to originally be used by the local police department in Philadelphia in the 1960’s. It was first used by the police departments public relations newsletter in 1961. The day after Thanksgiving was deemed “Black” due to the high levels of traffic jams and customers that were becoming problematic for the local officials. In 1981 marketers started to catch on to the term “Black Friday” in a positive outlook for sales purposes. According to an article published in the Philadelphia Inquirer, the meaning actually points to accounting practices. At the time, accounting was still being done in handwritten ledgers, using red ink to symbolize a loss in profits and black ink represented an increase in sales. It is said that “Black Friday” was the beginning of the holiday shopping rush, and thus the time period when stores were brought out of the red and into black. In the present day, Black Friday is a day where all businesses offer their best deals of the year to kick start the holiday shopping season. Almost all stores come out with an early bird special to attract consumers to their shop over their competitors. People will stand in line for hours before the stores are opened, to grab the best deals of the year. Recently there has been a growing trend towards bringing those Black Friday Sales online before the actual Friday of Black Friday. Black Friday is no more a one-day event. In last few years (starting from 2013 to be precise), Black Friday Sales have started way before Friday (earlier & earlier each year it seems!) with some stores starting their Black Friday sales on the actual American Thanksgiving day. The sales last up until Cyber Monday, which is the Monday after the weekend of Black Friday.
