Choosing furniture for any room in the house can be challenging. One thing that can make the choices easy is how much light you are dealing with, natural or otherwise.

The most highly lit areas in your home should be the ones that have the most foot traffic, either for socializing or for meals. The amount that comes in should help you make the choice on what kind and type of furniture to have. Highly lit areas, if you want them to remain so, should have lighter furniture to help accent the light. If you find that the light is too much, darker furniture will help bring down the tone.

Living rooms and kitchens, especially those in family homes, should have plenty of light. Meals and social events work best if people can see what's going on, and what they're eating. Lighter toned furniture and walls will help with that.

Bedrooms can be a tricky place for furniture. Traditionally, if you have trouble sleeping, darker coloured walls and furniture, and the lack of light they help produce, should help.  If you're a morning person, lighter walls and furniture are a must to maximize the effect.

In the same token, one has to find balance. If you're table set and sofa are dark, in a darker room, then the lamps should be a lighter colour in order to anchor the room and the eye. Choosing tables and sofas that match in colour and design is a great way to make the room match, producing an ascetically pleasing effect. Accent pieces like area rugs and smaller stands should be different enough to compliment the pieces you have, yet close enough to balance the room as well. Screen Shot 2015-10-09 at 11.20.14 AM
