The living room is one of the most used place in your home. Whether you’re relaxing after a long day, grabbing a quick bite to eat and watching the game, or entertaining guests, your sofa or sectional will be well used. That doesn’t mean your sofa needs to appear worn. Follow this care guide to keep your living room furniture looking as new as the day you brought it home.

Daily maintenance

Most living room upholstery can easily be wiped down. Grab a clean, dry white hand towel or lint brush and wipe down the entire sofa. This will break up dried-on spots and remove bits of food or dirt caught up in the corners. If you have pets, this method also helps grab pet hair caught on the surface. Placement in your home also plays a big role. Most fabrics, especially leather, fade when kept in direct sunlight. Consider moving your sofa around to avoid direct light, or cover those areas exposed to direct light with a throw pillow or throw blanket.

Spot cleaning

Curious children draw on everything, why not the sofa? Spills happen; life happens. There are plenty of options for getting rid of stains, but a few key tips remain constant.
  1. Check the fabric tag. Many sofas will have a tag to indicate the recommended cleaning solutions:
    • “W” for water-based cleaning solutions
    • “P” is for professional cleaning
    • “S” is for solvent-bases cleaners
    • “X” is for vacuum cleaning only
If your sofa does not have this tag, you should play it safe and assume the best way to clean is by using professional cleaning products.
  1. Spot test the cleaning solution on the backside of a cushion or sofa, where it is not likely to be seen. Especially if you’re using a DIY solution, it is best to check and make sure the cleaner does not discolor the fabric.
  2. Always clean during the day and in optimal light so you can see every spot and catch every mark.

Deep cleaning

Occasionally you will need to perform a deep clean of your sofa. Taking the time to fully clean your sofa will help keep your furniture looking as good as the day you bought it. Most professional cleaning services involve either a steam cleaner or professional cleaning agent. Give yourself a full day to do a deep clean and keep the area well ventilated to help with drying. If you are more of a DIY-er, home-based cleaners can do the trick. But keep in mind that using home-made cleaning agents can void your sofa’s warranty. The best advice is to buy a full fabric and care warranty with your purchase. These warranties often include fabric protection and repair for most every day accidents. Take advantage of these programs and save yourself the frustration of having to clean the sofa yourself.
